The Temple is a prominent Hindu pilgrimage location and is surrounded by forests. It is adjacent to the mountain ranges of Nar-Narayan. As per Hindu mythology, this is the place where Lord Shiva consumed the poison Halahala which originated from the sea when Devas (Gods) and Rakshasas (Demons) churned the sea order to obtain the Amrit. The poison from the
Samudramanthan (churning of ocean) made Lord Shiva's throat blue in color. Lord Shiva is also known as Nilkanth, meaning The Blue Throated One.
